What causes indoor air quality problems?

The EPA estimates that the air inside your home is two to five times more polluted than outside air.  Today's homes are very air tight, which means airborne pollutants frequently have no way to escape.  Your heating and air conditioning system circulates these pollutants when they are on.  Compounds found in carpeting, furniture, upholstery and drapery fabric consistently emit gases or fumes.

Other sources of pollutants can include cleaning agents, paints, and personal care products.  Also, moisture build-up in your heating and air conditioning system may lead to the formation of bacteria, fungi, mold, and other allergens which can cause serious health issues.

Routine cleaning and housekeeping helps reduce indoor air pollutants, but they're not cure-alls.  Some contaminants are so small that they may not be elimiinated by regular cleaning or they may never land on a surface.

Look for signs of problems with your home's ventilation.  Condensation on windows or walls, smelly or stuffy air, dirty heating and air conditioning equipment, are all indications that air quality may be less than ideal.  If you detect a problem or simply have a concern, call us to discuss a solution.
